Summary:

Adrien rubbed the back of his neck and didn't meet her eyes. "Sooo I kind of had a fight with my father. The part where the art room social scene comes in is, I told him I'm done modeling for anything but romance novel covers. And he doesn't believe me."

"...Romance novel covers," Marinette repeated slowly, imagination filling with Adrien in a charcoal suit waltzing with a woman in a crimson silk gown. Adrien in a pirate ship's crow's nest, poet shirt open to show his defined pecs and abs, with the black-and-red-garbed pirate queen. Adrien, blue-jeaned and shirtless and wielding a broadsword, with—

"The thing is—and this," Marc added, "is the part where Loverboy is getting all flustered—the thing is, romance novels, as a general rule, have two protagonists."

"Both of whom," continued Nathaniel while eyeing Marinette, "ought to be on the cover. Otherwise readers will get confused about the genre.

"Subtle," said Marinette. "Adjective. Antonyms include Marc and Nathaniel."

from swallow my doubt, turn it inside out (beautiful oblivion):
Adrien—he must, he thought, be Adrien at the moment; he could feel a needle in his arm, and the spot on his thigh where another had stuck him, and, well. Medical needle versus magical armor? He wouldn't bet on the needle. He fisted his right hand, thumb in, and drew the thumb out: yeah, no claws, no ring. Possibly no Plagg, though as soon as he thought that, he knew it wasn't true: something in his chest was fluttering, on the wrong side to be his heart. The familiarity of it, given both little jinnīs' ability to fly through things and their need to hide Adrien's being Chat Noir from everyone, and knowing how even with no reason Plagg remembered to stay, he hadn't left Adrien long? Yeah, Adrien's lung was probably the perfect spot for a nap.

Summary:

"What's this got to do with you wanting help breaking your heart of your boy?"

"He's not my boy." Ladybug leaned against him, one arm still holding her knees to her chest. "I'm not sure he even knows I'm interested. If he does, he's ignoring it with all his might." (Chat spared a moment to silently curse this callous little fool, whoever he was.) "But I can't think about much else."

(Callous little fool who didn't even want to know what a priceless treasure as Ladybug's heart was right there for his taking, if only he were willing to offer anything of himself in return. If only he were willing to notice her.)

"That's the problem, Chaton." She sounded so tired. "There's so much I need to think about, and all I'm thinking about is him. There's so much I need to do, and most of what I'm doing is increasingly desperate schemes to get his attention. If he'd just tell me no, I think I could stop. If I knew for sure he doesn't want me, it would hurt for a while, but then I could be done." She lifted their joined hands to her cheek; it wasn't a kiss to his hand, but it was tantalizingly close. "And then I could do my job better. Right?"

SFWA's boundary between short stories and novelettes, for Nebula Award purposes, is 7500 words. I have four published fanfics longer than that. One's the HP AU2 novel-length, one's the [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang novella-length, and the latter is crap and I'm afraid to find out about the former. Two more clock in under 7.6K and I'm entirely comfortable fudging the line to call the one-shot a short story; the chaptered work, dunno how to class it precisely, but obviously I need to italicize the work title (though I don't think I have been) because the chapter titles get quote marks.

The piece in the middle, though. The 10.6K story I just finished in draft. (Which I can't break into chapters because the first two scenes total under 1.6K, the fourth and final scene is 2.4K, and there's just no good way to divide that!) Definitely a novelette. But do I italicize its title, like a novella or novel, or put it in quote marks, like a short story?

Summary:

There's a Tumblr post by trickerydickerydock, in Venom fandom: superhero peril tropes and tell them where your boyfriend is, Eddie.

Adrien has been held for ransom before, and he knows the routine: be patient, don't annoy anyone who's armed, and wait for the police to find a solution that the kidnapper(s) don't want his father thinking is an option.

But this time Adrien wasn't the only one taken. He wasn't even the primary target; that would be Chat Noir's only known civilian friend, the only person he's ever paid attention to after hearing her declare her love for him. Since all anyone knows Adrien is to Ladybug is her celebrity crush, he might be an afterthought, or just an annoyance along for the ride. And he still has his ring.

Hawkmoth probably hasn't seen that or any Tumblr post. (Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra. Tell them where your boyfriend is, Eddie.) Has Marinette?

From "Run(a)way Model", seven sentences because that rounds out the scene:
Claire doesn't pay the kid much more mind than she ever does. He's a regular at this convenience store, maybe a year or two older than Noemie, never seems to have a parent with him; he's usually here for a bottle of iced coffee, some snack-size chunks of cheddar, and a hot sandwich if there are any, a cold one if not. Sometimes a bottle of ibuprofen. Rarely, something sweet. She mostly ever pays attention to him in the first place because he looks kind of like that model Noemie has proclaimed her eternal love for, and because Claire works days; kids her granddaughter's age should be in school most of the times—such as now—that she sees this boy, and with as much food as he buys, she has to wonder who's supposed to be feeding him.

This morning Claire rings him up for a forest green backpack, a black hooded sweatshirt, a multi-pack of boxer-briefs and another of socks, a travel toiletries kit, a bag of mint chocolates, an electric hair clipper kit, and a box of dark brown hair dye. He pays in cash like always, and the customer after him gets snippy over the ten-cent difference between what the price tag on this protein bar's shelf says and what the register says the bar costs, and Claire isn't getting paid to worry about customers who don't cause trouble.

Does AO3 send email notifs in batches or something? Bc I don't believe four of my subscriptions updated in the past five minutes, and yet.

ETA: Another notif just now, it is almost exactly an hour after I posted this, and I actually just deleted the email because I'd already seen the fic by looking at the latest on AO3 in the fandom.

Summary:

"You could have asked me," Chloé says irritably. "Why does Dupain-Cheng even carry menstrual pads? That's girl stuff."

Because she's a girl? Adrien almost says. Someday he wants to tell her he himself isn't, though. What else could—

"I know people who menstruate, Chloé," Marinette says. "Some of my best friends are menstruators."

"So you think it'll get you in girls' pants?" asks Chloé. "You know she's straight, right?"

Adrien has lost track of the pronoun referents here.

this bread recipe seems to meet with our collective approval, though I need to remember less rosemary next time. Also, the bread machine's bake cycles may not work (we don't know, that's a later experiment; circumstantial evidence argues that the machine is junk, but the facts aren't all in), but the dough cycle obviously does, and getting the bread from heaps of ingredients to ready for the oven is the hard part of baking anyway.

But you know what else we can do with a bread machine dough cycle, that frankly isn't worth the effort (imo) without?

homemade pizza

(the 1994 original of the bread machine pizza dough cookbook I'm used to is $100+ used on Amazon. I didn't check condition. the 2005 update, in Used - Very Good condition, no less? $5. and the current edition of the bread machine bread cookbook that's first in that series? (I have to specify because there are at least six by that title, distinguished by Roman numerals.) new for $9. they are both mine now or anyway on arrival. MWAHAHA.)

From [archiveofourown.org profile] Socchan's School of Writing Scenes:
1) What is the first thing in this scene that a character needs to be doing?
1a) As in, if you didn't show the character doing this, you would have to write exposition of them doing this
1b) Like, a lot of exposition. Not just one or two sentences.
1c) Honestly, if you have to go into exposition to get to the exposition that explains this scene, back up a step.
...aka my actual fucking life right now, y'all

So how's the writing?
alexseanchai: Ladybug, of Miraculous fame, with a rainbow Pride background (Default)
C'mon, brain, anytime you feel like cooperating! Tallying this is less work the less behind I am...

On the other hand, rewriting scene two of "swallow my doubt" for improved proximity to real hospital procedure has the fun side effect of bumping up the drama! Even if I do keep going to check something and, five articles later, having to try to archaeologically reconstruct what I wanted the rest of the sentence I was working on to be!

So, check on in!
alexseanchai: Ladybug, of Miraculous fame, with a rainbow Pride background (Default)
Bodies suck. Hopefully writing does not?
alexseanchai: Ladybug, of Miraculous fame, with a rainbow Pride background (Default)
This fic would be progressing a lot fucking faster if I had any solid notion of:

tl;dr: mrgh )
* to what extent Miraculous Cure's effects on an existing patient disrupt procedures around examination, diagnosis, treatment, observation, and check-out

...one of these things is not like the others

(I think my thought here is, since I know Miraculous Cure is currently functioning as the plot gizmo that makes the utterly implausible premise go, in order to sustain my readers' suspension of disbelief I must make everything else as realistic as possible?)
alexseanchai: Ladybug, of Miraculous fame, with a rainbow Pride background (Default)
But I am le tired.

How's the writing?
