alexseanchai: Malahide Castle, Ireland (Ireland)
2014-04-29 12:33 pm

(no subject)

So instead of a month in the British Isles, I'm probably thinking two weeks in part of Ireland, or maybe part of England or Wales, but I think Ireland wins the first time I go to the British Isles. (Sorry, Cadair Idris. I will hike up you someday!) So keep bringing the suggestions for all of the British Isles on my previous post, but: which area of Ireland should I visit first and why?

I'm not sure I'm making any sense here

So I am a firm believer in the idea that artists and crafters (ze says as though there's a difference) should be paid for their work. Somebody wants to give something away for free or sell it for cost of materials, awesome, more power to 'em, but the default assumption should be that this project took someone's time and time is valuable.

Except I just got Betsy Greer's essay collection Craftivism, and one of the essays includes the line "However, marketing one's self and selling one's work as a name is still a capitalist tool that's hard to avoid."

Capitalism = colonialism = unsustainability. Or capitalism = colonialism + unsustainability, I'm not sure, but the three words are definitely inextricably linked. (Thank you, Ecofeminism class.) I'd much rather be a socialist. And not in the Fox News sense of the term, either, because Obama's a capitalist no matter how anyone but Fox cares to slice it. But I have to live in a capitalist society, and I still like the idea of making money off my word art and jewelry art and yarn art. But. Capitalism.

I need to go think about this.

pertinent to previous post

Free Culture. The term's supposed to evoke 'speech' not 'beer' or 'lunch'—no legal restrictions on people's freedom to use and benefit from the use of Free Culture content, to study Free Culture content and apply what they learn, to make and distribute copies of Free Culture content, or to change and improve Free Culture content and distribute the derivative works—but in practice if there's a price tag on content it's not really Free Culture. And, y'know, my Lavender Blue I [seem to recall I] released an ebook under a Free Culture Creative Commons license. Unsurprisingly, I don't think I've sold any copies of the CreateSpace hardcopy.

Like I said: need to think about this.
