is mah BIRFDAY

(to spare my inbox, I shall assume you have all wished me a happy twenty-sixth birthday already! thank you!)

So, uh, does anyone who's been following [tumblr.com profile] seananmcguire actually know the rules of the Birthday Unending? I have gathered that one asks for admittance on or around one's birthday, that one brings things that make one either happy or sad, and that one Does Not Touch The Corn. Am I missing anything crucial?

Has anyone watched Transparent on Amazon Prime? I recall hearing about it when it premiered, and now it's back in the news because apparently people care about the Golden Globes, and I am taking a floating holiday from work today and thinking about marathoning a thing and hey look I have an Amazon Prime account. But I don't want to waste my time on a show that's not depicting us well, either. And the casting of an apparently cis man as the leading trans woman is cringey, you know? (Let's just not discuss the tone of some of the news coverage. Jeffrey Tambor stars as "a transgender man who transitions into a woman"? NO. NO THAT IS NOT HOW IT WORKS.)

And while the Wiki page is really encouraging, that doesn't actually say anything about either the quality of the show qua depiction of my people or the quality of the show qua show. So I'm hoping people whose opinions I trust have opinions on the show.

And if not, or if those opinions are universally negative, I'll just marathon Korra S1 or Sailor Moon Classic S1 or whatever. And I think I'm two episodes behind on Sailor Moon Crystal again...

hobbit birthday present.

I am not sure if it needs a warning for rape, given that no actual rape occurs. Needs a warning for major character death though.

no, brain. no. no. I do not have time to take on another project. no, not even one that pays. (which reminds me, need to put out the CLOSED sign on [personal profile] alexconall stickypost, not that anyone's knocked on that door in months.) judging by the "drop by my office" part of the email to all the English majors and writing minors, and the "Corvallis-based" being the only adjective applied to the author of the ebook that the author needs copyediting for, they want someone who's on Corvallis campus anyway.

Iiiii don't think I am marathoning any TV today.

(1) It is nine-forty and my work due today is not yet all done.

(2) Too many of the readings I just did are audiovisual and now my head hurts.

(3) Virginia Woolf says women (well, people in general, but she's making a point about women) need time, money, and "a room of one's own" to write, and I have been lacking time (and money) and consequently not writing a hell of a lot. And Gloria Anzaldúa says, in essence, fuck that, write anyway. Which, valid point, because if the only people who get to write are the people who are privileged in the ways Woolf says people need to be in order to write, then all the stories told will be from a privileged point of view (obvious problem: obvious) and also they'll probably all be the same story. As Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie explains, problem. So, you know. Fuck all that, I'm gonna write. Not quite sure what to write, but I'm gonna write. ...just as soon as I get the last WGSS reading done and the discussion post, and it might be wise to start in on the GEO readings and discussion post due tomorrow. (What did I do this weekend? Oh yeah, was running around doing shit for Translucent.)
