Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha writes rockin' poetry. To illustrate, "
femmes are film stars" (NSFW; possibly CN sex work, I'm not sure if I'm reading it right). (I'd quote more but
Love Cake is packed in box 20 which I think is the bottom-most one of six boxes high.)
I'm posting this in part because Maggie Stiefvater
apparently stepped in it regarding diversity in media by suggesting that (1) mental illness is Other (2) white folk have a place on panels devoted to diversity (3) the only thing white media creators can do to encourage diversity in media is to write more diverse media. Which, well, (1) mental illness
actually is actively Othered (2) why wouldn't we? not the whole panel, gods no, not even half the panel—but unless the only Other we're concerned with is racially or culturally defined, white folks who are Othered have a right to be on these panels (3) okay yes Stiefvater did step in it. Signal-boosts, people. Actively consume media produced by people of marginalized demographics, lots of different marginalized demographics, and then
talk about the such media you enjoyed and why you enjoyed it. It is not and should not be entirely on PoC to provide all PoC representation in media, but it also is not and should not be entirely on white people to rescue PoC from their un-media-represented condition.
so we make our own movie
as we walk down the street
make revolutions with chipped turquoise nails
Sing it, Leah.
