because what I really need is original fic ideas, or something
"lord", etymologically "guardian of bread"; "lady" possibly "maker of bread", etymonline says OED doesn't really believe this but hasn't a better idea.
let's make those gender-neutral terms. or relating to social roles that aren't gender but aren't not gender either. expect that any household will have at least one adult of each (won't always, of course, but expect) and the same words probably apply to the leaders of a city. different words for the leaders of a nation, but everyone knows it's the same roles scaled up.
marriage can play into this but doesn't necessarily. the lady and lord—and it is that priority order; guarding the food stores means less if there's nothing to store, and yes, Talis Kimberley "The Hearth and the Hive", we're looking at you—of a two-adult household? probably married. not a rule, it must work with siblings or queerplatonic partners, but probably married. unless marriage is about producing children and therefore people care about ovarian- vs testicular-morph, but in that case there's probably several types of social bond that look like marriage, but like. *flails*
the Lady and Lord of a sizable settlement? maybe married (or whatever). maybe more like business partners. maybe don't even like each other much, personally, but as long as they're good leaders, good at their defined roles, and work well together, it works.
the—for lack of better terms, but I'll need to fix that if this gets anywhere—Queen and King of a nation? (and that's Queen Regnant, not Queen Consort.) unlikely to be personally connected, by marriage or in any other manner. they need to be a united front, though, even more so than as in the above paragraph. and had better be really good at their jobs.
