So was Balthazar already working with Castiel? It doesn't seem so, since only the audience was privy to their reunion conversation. But then why was Balthazar stocking up on holy weapons and souls? Already planning to ally with Cas, or just for his own reasons? It would make more sense if they *were* already working together, but Cas had no reason to fake his surprise at Balthazar's actions when the Winchesters weren't in the room...
The scene where Cas tortures the little boy and Dean is the only one to object looks *way* different in retrospect. At the time it felt like the show was presenting it as "dark but necessary" whereas in retrospect it's more like just!Dean being outnumbered by dark!Cas and soulless!Sam. I continue to appreciate this show's take on the ends vs. means question--luminosityarticulated it really well today with her observation that "Castiel could explain away every single thing he did 'for the greater good,' thereby NOT learning the lesson that the greater good is made up of many, many lesser goods."
Anyway, thanks for inspiring me to re-watch that ep!
