Things I do not have time for no really brain stop it: a novel (or three or five) exploring the concept of magical-girl anime from the PoV of someone who's grown up watching magical-girl anime.

...rec me other-than-Sailormoon magical-girl anime?

Cardcaptor Sakura, Puella Magi Madoka Magika (this one comes with many, many warnings that are also spoilers, but it's really a lot of trope inversion at base, which given magical girl tropes, should tell you a lot), Full Moon o Sagashite (a bit not quite traditionally Magical Girl, but good and cute, from what I remember; I do need to actually watch all of it at some point), Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (I've only read a good portion of the manga, years ago, but now I want to go find the anime xD)...

Um, this list on wikipedia might be a good source; I haven't watched or heard enough (or any, about some) about most of these to give recs. :D

I refused to read Full Moon wo Sagashite in high school bc my sisters told me it's really sad. Kamikaze kaito Jeanne also broke my heart, but I can only second the rec; it's fantastic.
