Things I do not have time for no really brain stop it: a novel (or three or five) exploring the concept of magical-girl anime from the PoV of someone who's grown up watching magical-girl anime.

...rec me other-than-Sailormoon magical-girl anime?

It comes with caveats, but the webcomic Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki is about a story of a boy grown up on magical girl anime who ends up getting the chance to live it out. It does some trope deconstruction, but it eventually ends up more in Norse mythology than magical girl anime.

An anime that has magical girls in it is Someday's Dreamers.
