I am amused that Manager told me just now I ought to get a cat. She can't possibly know I was discussing that very thing with Therapist earlier today.

Sadly, cats cost money.

:D Cats are wonderful.

In other news, money sucks.

Research sliding scale veterinary clinics in your area. (But yes.)

Yeah, it sucks how the benefit of pets is often in conflict with the financial commitment they entail.

They do cost money, unfortunately. The upfront costs can sting, a lot (ie, vaccines, chipping, etc), and you do have ongoing costs of food and litter.

That said -- if you wanted to DM me your general area and how far you're willing to drive, I'd be happy to research what adoption and low-cost veterinary services exist in your area. Not as something you need to do anything about right now, but just so you have the information at hand if and when you do have more room in your budget.

(I am very, very much a cat person and I do not think my mental health would be anywhere near as good without our cats, so I always find myself wanting to help people make pets work in their life/budget if they, you know, do want them. <3)

Cats have great benefits, assuming you find one that is compatible with your temperament. And yes, they cost money up front and more when ill.

The only other thing to note is that once you have one in your household, it seems easier to have more.

If you want to PM at some point, I can tell you some cost-saving things we are doing with our two.

(Like we are paying for basic pet insurance through the ASPCA which is my peace of mind in case one of them is an idiot and ingests something inedible and needs surgery; breaks a bone falling; gets bitten by a spider; gets diagnosed with a chronic condition...those are all covered. I didn't shell out for the one that covers acute infections or rabies vaccines, but. It covers most emergency "oh shit how will I pay for this" stuff.)
