Theater patron wearing pumpkin hat, after show (probably paraphrased): "Do you have any white or silver shoes? You should wear those instead of the black shoes. The black is so distracting from that pretty [white and ivory] gown."

Me: ...

I Facebooked the director when I got home to inquire as to just how rude this is (because of course I don't know theater standards of etiquette). Her response: "she told me too. keep in mind, she was wearing a pumpkin on her head. :)"

And I am wearing the black shoes again tomorrow, which is the final performance. Because the director told me to and I don't see why I should compromise her artistic vision to please one theater patron.

It is quite rude, but also normal, everyday rude. It falls under "everybody's a critic". Smile, nod, forget it as soon as possible, unless you want to laugh at the person with a pumpkin on her head.

I do in fact have comfy white fancy shoes. But director said black, so black it is.
