I feel like bad guys don't *need* to be sympathetic. It depends on the kind of story you're writing. Lord of the Rings works just fine with a Big Bad that's barely even on-page, never mind sympathetic. It can make your story more nuanced? But it's by far not necessary.

Yup. Nuance is good? And I have plans for this story to be a series, so I can nuance up the bad guys then? But I don't think I need it here and now.
