liveblogging Disney's Lion King
It still bugs me that Disney made a movie with an African setting but no actual African people, most of two decades before they made a movie with a black princess.
"Circle of Life" is still phenomenal.
"Before sunrise, he's your son." :)
Mufasa: Everything you see exists together, in a delicate balance. As king, you need to understand that balance, and respect all the creatures-- from the crawling ant to the leaping antelope.
Simba: But, Dad, don't we eat the antelope?
Mufasa: Yes, Simba, but let me explain. When we die, our bodies become the grass. And the antelope eat the grass. And so we are all connected in the great Circle of Life.
I do not recall Zazu's song. The script does not recall Zazu's song. Is this another lost scene like "Human Again" in Beauty and the Beast? Wait, no, Simba sounds different from "Just Can't Wait to be King"...
Arranged marriage is bleh. Even if they do fall in love properly as adults. Though Simba's "I can't marry her! She's my friend!" line is priceless (however revealing of contemporary sexual politics) and wouldn't come about any other way.
"Hey! Why don't you pick on somebody your own size?" "Liiiike...you?" "Oops."
Mufasa: Simba... Let me tell you something that my father told me... Look at the stars. The great kings of the past look down on us from those stars.
Simba: Really?
Mufasa: Yes... So whenever you feel alone, just remember that those kings will always be there to guide you ... And so will I.
"My words are a matter of Pride."
I do kinda like "Be Prepared" but ye gods is it—and the treatment of Ed generally—ableist.
"The future is littered with prizes
And though I'm the main addressee
The point that I must emphasize is
You won't get a sniff without me!" —ohai trickle-down economics, succinctly stated. Please observe that the hyenas chanting "We'll have food, lots of food, we repeat, endless meat" a tidge later in the song will be just as hungry as everyone else when Scar's king.
The stampede. ;_;
After the stampede. ;_;
Timon treats Pumbaa in a distinctly gendered manner. Specifically, Pumbaa has the idea of keeping Simba because he might grow up to be on their side, and Timon laughs it off and then claims credit.
Autistic!Pumbaa? ("I'd say brownish-gold.")
IT'S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL
Way to respect Simba's consent, boys. He didn't want to tell you his thoughts on the stars, and your mocking reaction is precisely why.
OOOH hey Rafiki does divination! (I remembered there being ancestor worship in this film but not divination.)
Timon's shocked face when Simba recognizes Nala!
Autistic!Pumbaa! Out of his depth and falling back on social scripts!
KITTY. Nala's reaction to the water! Nala pushing Simba back in 'cause he likes the water so much!
Come to think, wasn't there a song in Lion King Broadway that explained why Nala left Pride Rock?
Simba: You knew my father?
Rafiki: Correction-- I know your father.
Simba: I hate to tell you this, but... he died. A long time ago.
Rafiki: Nope. Wrong again! Ha ha hah! He's alive! And I'll show him to you. You follow old Rafiki, he knows the way. Come on!
Mufasa: Simba, you have forgotten me.
Simba: No. How could I?
Mufasa: You have forgotten who you are, and so have forgotten me. Look inside yourself, Simba. You are more than what you have become. You must take your place in the Circle of Life.
Simba: How can I go back? I'm not who I used to be.
Mufasa: Remember who you are. You are my son, and the one true king. Remember who you are.
Please observe the visual dramatics accompanying the above quote.
DRESS IN DRAG AND DO THE HULA nope nothing transmisogynistic or culturally appropriative there.
Nala did respect Simba's consent wrt what happened to Mufasa, sort of, but if Simba had told Nala why he left then Scar wouldn't have been able to use it against Simba, I don't think.
Did Rafiki just martial arts?
Love how Simba uses the trick Nala's used on him twice this film to beat Scar.

(Deliberately ironic icon is full of mixed feelings about most portrayals of trans women on film.)

Maybe? I do not recall the Broadway well enough. I only saw it once and that was in Pittsburgh so easily eight years ago, and I cannot recall when I last listened to the cast recording from the original Broadway production.

It was not me. And I do not recall what "honey badger" signifies...

Honey badger is a memetastic animal but in this case it signifies that they live adopted another animal native to that area of Africa. Disney's developing a new kids show about Simba'd son starting a "Lion Guard" to protect the Pridelands and one of the listed characters is a honey badger described as Timon and Pumbaa's adopted child.
