Coworker. I realize you are trying to help. But an ad for a support group for people with chronic pain, whose next meeting is at three in a town an hour south of here on a day I have to be at work at four, is...less than helpful.

This reminds me of all the doctors who know that I'm (a) agoraphobic and (b) unable to drive who still keep telling me how much swimming would improve my life. Getting to a pool would require at least an hour on a bus, each way, with a transfer and a fairly long walk in order to safely cross the street on the way home. The bus stop is right opposite the rec center, but it's not safe to cross there, and the nearest light is a long way away.

I eventually got them to shut up about swimming by telling them I'm phobic of water. Which I am, just not of water in pools.

RIGHT.

you speak my language of annoyance.

(also the cost of the pool admittance)

Plus there's the problem of long, thick, wet hair while waiting for the bus home in cold or chilly weather.

And, on days when I go out to catch the bus and then take the bus home from wherever[, that's as much physical exertion as I can handle. I can't see swimming on top of that.

I think that it really, really doesn't get through to them that I can't drive.

Very much less than helpful.
