dear yuletide giftwrapper!
Hi there! My AO3 name is
AlexSeanchai, and let me assure you at the jump that optional details are optional. If you had a story in mind when you offered these characters, go for it.
I should also advise you up front that I am a Hellenic polytheist, ancestor worshipper, and animist, and I am really hoping to see, anywhere it might come up, respect for my religious beliefs. This is relevant to at least four of my six requests. This hope is an optional detail, but I want to highlight the DNW of "Disrespect to my religious beliefs". (As you might thus guess, I am not really looking for a Christmas story!)
Hey, you know what, what the hell. If you want to write me interactive fiction for Tarot or Neolithic Sites, that would be grand fun!
Likes: FEMSLASH. GEN. Ladies being awesome. People of color being awesome. Queer people being awesome. Trans and genderqueer people being awesome. People of minority religions (especially polytheists, ancestor worshippers, and animists) being awesome. Disabled people being awesome. Competence kink. Nonperfect people having nonperfect relationships (whether familial, platonic, romantic, or sexual) but all parties are good people trying to make the relationship work as best they know how. Ordinary people caught in extraordinary events. Worldbuilding! If you're leaning porny: bondage, body modification, endurance, nipple play (okay, really breast play, but
kink_wiki doesn't have a tag for that), sensation play, temperature play, impact play with the emphasis on play, toys toys toys, soft sensuous things, and writing.
Dislikes: Underage. Non-con. Anything that sets off my embarrassment squick. Anything sexy involving eating or excreting (though if you want to write food porn in the sense of conveying what a tasty meal the characters are having, go to town). Disrespectful treatment of polytheism, ancestor worship, and/or animism. Disrespectful treatment of [insert marginalized group here]. Cross-generational sexual and/or romantic relationships, though if an involved character does not, in my head, have an age, then it won't bother me as long as all the involved characters are clearly adult. (This last is probably only relevant, given these requests, with regards to Neolithic Sites. If that.)
Downhome Aphrodite - Seanan McGuire (Song)
canon link (that's a fanvid; pay no attention to the visuals, you're here for the music), lyrics, acquisition via CD Baby
Singer (Downhome Aphrodite); Downhome Aphrodite (Downhome Aphrodite)
FEMSLASHY LOVE STORY :)
If one or both of the characters are present-day Hellenic polytheists, that would rock. But if you are not up to that, don't worry about it: I will be very happy with any (f/f, please, though I don't particularly care whether cis, trans, or genderqueer f's there) story in which Singer falls fast and hard for Downhome Aphrodite and DA is kind of a cynic about the whole concept but finds herself falling slowly for Singer. And they both know Greek mythology inside out and backwards! (Though Venus and Vulcan are, of course, Roman.)
Or really anything that expands upon canon will be lovely.
Every Heart a Doorway - Seanan McGuire
acquisition via Amazon
Nancy Whitman; Kade Bronson; Sumi (Every Heart A Doorway)
This is an OR request, though if you want to write any two or three of the three having adventures set at the school in the interstices of canon I am certainly up for that. I want to see Nancy in the underworld. Kade in Prism. Sumi and her candy corn farmer! Elaborate on what canon has told us about the-character-of-your-choice's past in their Otherworld, and I will be overjoyed.
The Iliad - Homer
various translations on Project Gutenberg or acquire your favorite translation from your favorite bookstore
Helen of Troy (The Iliad)
You know, the whole apple deal and Paris choosing Aphrodite really screwed Helen over. Helen didn't consent to being the prize in this game!
Did Helen ever find herself missing Menelaus and Hermione and simply being Helen of Sparta instead of Helen of Troy? Perhaps Hecuba and Andromache were comforting company?
I'm also wondering by what standard Helen was the most beautiful woman in the world. (I'm a women's studies major. I have Opinions about beauty standards.) Did she ever think another woman (perhaps Hecuba or Andromache!) was more beautiful, at least in some respect, than she was herself?
What was Helen's religious life like during canon?
(I should maybe warn you I haven't read the Iliad in a long time, and I have consumed assorted things spinning off the Iliad a lot more recently, so what is in my head as canon may not be what's actually on the page as canon. Please try not to worry about this.)
Neolithic Sites of Southern England (Anthropomorphic)
Avebury on Wiki, Stonehenge on Wiki, Wayland's Smithy on Wiki, West Kennet Long Barrow on Wiki as starting points for research
no characters specifically requested. nominated characters: Avebury (Henge); Stonehenge (Henge); Waylands Smithy (Barrow); West Kennet Long Barrow (Barrow)
When you decided you might be able to write for this canon, you probably had a story in mind. Or at least the seed of one. Plant that seed. I am curious what sort of tree it will be.
(I am sorry I do not have any prompts. I promise I will be delighted by your story, however it plays out. It's just that I am intrigued by the intersection of these holy sites and the concept of anthropomorphic, but also a total newbie to anthropomorphic.)
(Also I have Spiral Dance's "Wayland's Steel" in my head. Probably next up on the mental jukebox, Kellianna's "Avebury", "Stonehenge", and "Sacred Stones of Stonehenge", and, for West Kennet Long Barrow, "Ancestor's Song", also by Kellianna, and Sharon Knight and T. Thorn Coyle's "Ancestor Chant", "Beyond the Gates", and "Prayer for the Dead". Spiral Dance lyrics, Kellianna lyrics, Knight and Coyle lyrics. Don't mind me, unless you want to use these as prompts.)
Tarot (Divination Cards)
Magician on learntarot.com, High Priestess on learntarot.com, Hierophant on learntarot.com, Strength on learntarot.com
Magician (Tarot Card); Hierophant (Tarot Card); High Priestess (Tarot Card); Strength (Tarot Card)
I am not sure whether you want to write these characters as consciously figures in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (or, you know, whatever deck you like, though for reasonably obvious reasons the RWS is the one it's most likely you and I both know) or as people who happen to embody the archetypes these cards represent. I will be delighted by either story.
My original thought on choosing this canon to nominate was Magician/High Priestess and Hierophant/Strength. (Minus lion!) In both cases, I want to see each of the pair learning to appreciate and rely on the strengths of the other of the pair. Perhaps the Magician learning that sometimes one must step back and ask what the Gods want, and the High Priestess learning that sometimes one must step forward and act according to one's own will. Perhaps the Hierophant learning that sometimes patience works better than command, and perhaps Strength learning that sometimes community has advantages over solitariness.
But I will be perfectly happy with gen of pretty much any description featuring these four, or with shippy fic pairing any of these characters with any other. (Or, hell, puppy pile!) I don't have that many prompts in me, I'm sorry to say. I hope however that when you decided you might be able to write for this canon, you had a story idea in mind. Write that!
I would prefer that all four characters be women: cis, trans, or genderqueer, I really don't care. I would also prefer that the context, especially if you're writing people-who-embody-these-archetypes, be polytheistic.
You Belong With Me - University of Rochester Yellowjackets (Music Video)
canon link
Glasses Guy (You Belong With Me); Jock Guy (You Belong With Me)
I would love to see some post-canon here. Like, in the video they're self-evidently college students; how do they maintain a relationship with the wildly different schedules college course offerings tend to impose on people with different majors and interests? What about after graduation? What do they do then?
I would also love to see some things before or in the scene cuts of canon. Feel free to bring in Jock's [ex-]girlfriend here: canon seems to summarize a lot of time passing and history-of-friendship in the space of a few minutes, and I'd love to see any detail of that elaborated on. Case in point: why are Glasses and Jock trading notes on sketchpads instead of, idk, texting?
And what would really rock my socks is something—meeting one of the above prompts or a straight-up canon retelling—starring Glasses Girl and Jock Girl. (Cis, trans, genderqueer, mix and match, I don't care.)
