put another dime in the jukebox, baby, come take your time and dance with me

Hi there! My AO3 name is [personal profile] AlexSeanchai, and let me assure you at the jump that optional details are optional.

I should also advise you up front that I am a Hellenic polytheist, ancestor worshipper, and animist, and I am really hoping to see, anywhere it might come up, respect for my religious beliefs. I admit to skewing my requests in favor of stories from my religious tradition. This hope is an optional detail, but I want to highlight the DNW of "Disrespect to my religious beliefs".

I am explicitly welcoming crossovers between my requests.

Likes: FEMSLASH. GEN. Ladies being awesome. People of color being awesome. Queer people being awesome. Trans and genderqueer people being awesome. People of minority religions (especially polytheists, ancestor worshippers, and animists) being awesome. Disabled people being awesome. Competence kink. Nonperfect people having nonperfect relationships (whether familial, platonic, romantic, or sexual) but all parties are good people trying to make the relationship work as best they know how. Ordinary people caught in extraordinary events. Worldbuilding! If you're leaning porny: bondage, body modification, endurance, nipple play (okay, really breast play, but [community profile] kink_wiki doesn't have a tag for that), sensation play, temperature play, impact play with the emphasis on play, toys toys toys, soft sensuous things, and writing.

Dislikes: Underage. Non-con. Anything that sets off my embarrassment squick—avoid public humiliation, for instance. Anything sexy involving eating or excreting (though if you want to write food porn in the sense of conveying what a tasty meal the characters are having, go to town). Disrespectful treatment of polytheism, ancestor worship, and/or animism. Disrespectful treatment of [insert marginalized group here]. Cross-generational sexual and/or romantic relationships, though if an involved character does not, in my head, have an age, then it won't bother me as long as all the involved characters are clearly adult. (Deities don't have ages. Just flat out don't. Or rather, since they can appear as any age they like... Does that make sense?)

Athena - CircusP & CrusherP (Song) (fanart, fanfic)
song and lyrics
Brace yourself and run into the battlefield
Move on, don't falter, plan your pursuit
And charge on in, head on, I will be your shield
Go on, release the goddess inside you

Athena is the Goddess I pay most attention to. This song encapsulates a lot of who She is, but also it's about Her giving instructions—marching orders, perhaps—to a listener. Tell me about the listener: who is she, what is she doing, what does Athena need her to be doing instead? Does "release the goddess inside you" imply that the listener might undergo apotheosis, becoming a Deity herself as Ariadne and Heracles did?

Dance in the Circle - Heather Alexander (Song) (fanart, fanfic)
song and lyrics
Success will be yours, through several doors,
Whatever you wish, you will find you can do—
Beware of this prize, as a curse in disguise,
Since your mortal life soon will be through—

What are faerie promises worth? Faerie treasures, faerie rewards, faerie wisdom?

Earthquake Weather - Seanan McGuire (Song) (fanart, fanfic)
buy CD and lyrics
This story has been told before:
The broken arch, the secret door.
The king lies bleeding on the floor,
They say.

And the summer's queen in her gown of green,
She can't forget the things she's seen.
Her bloody hands just won't come clean,
And that's why she ran away

Tell the story of these particular lines. Weave in other elements of the lyrics if you can.

Mary Mary - SJ Tucker (Song) (fanfic)
song and lyrics
the winners write the history and religion writes the rules
but prophecies are nothing acted out by men and fools.
we take chances on nothing and hold our secrets high
chances taken long ago gave birth to the immaculate lie

Mary mother of Jesus had a hard life to live. Tell me about that.

Alternately: "slivers of the goddess that they never let us see" is the line that most strikes me in this song. In a polytheistic world, where apotheosis is not unheard of (and may well be how Mary's mortal son got to be a god in the first place), who was Mary, and who did she become?

(Bonus points if you cross this over with Arcade Fire's "Abraham's Daughter".)

Mother of the Crows - Seanan McGuire (Song) (fanfic)
buy CD and lyrics
Give me leave to light the way,
Bird-wise mother of the crows;
There are laws we must obey,
Certain ways this story goes.
Let me carve the pumpkin's face,
Light the candle, dare the dark.
We who fly must know our place,
Let the winter make its mark...

This is such a perfectly polytheistic song, even though I know nothing of McGuire's religious beliefs and, to the best of my knowledge, the Mother of the Crows is McGuire's invention. How does that polytheism play out in the singer's life? What festivals does she celebrate for the Mother of the Crows? What does she do at regular intervals to honor Her, to make offerings to Her, to ask Her blessings? Who else does she worship, and what stories exist about the Mother of the Crows and the others of Her pantheon?

Out of the Woods - Taylor Swift (Music Video) (fanfic)
video and lyrics
And I remember thinkin'
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?

Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet? Good!

This seems like it's set in a land of magic, doesn't it? The trees growing from the sand and the earth as she walks by. The ethereal nature of that bright blue gown against the shadowed forest, against the snow. Falling through the sea into the desert and then the snowy forest, still damp with saltwater. The wolves that chased her earlier now standing tamely beside her.

The lightning is a particularly striking visual, as is the forest on fire. And the final moment, when the her who has been through all this touches the shoulder of the her who isn't visibly marked by these experiences.

"I remember" is a repeated line. What is the significance of her memory?

"She lost him, but she found herself, and somehow that was everything."

Tomb of the King - Damh the Bard (Song) (fanfic)
song and lyrics
Beneath a mist-capped mountain,
An oaken forest did grow,
Around and ancient trackway,
that led to the old Barrow.

Stories forgotten. Magic destroyed. And in the end, what gain, and to whom?

Which Witch - Florence + the Machine (Song) (fanfic)
song and lyrics
I’m not beat up on this yet,
You can’t tell me to regret,
Been in the dark since the day we met,
Fire, help me to forget.

The imagery is obviously a witch trial and witch burning, akin to those spoken of in Spiral Dance's "Burning Times". The oft-cited (certainly Spiral Dance cites it) statistic, which let me just point out is false, is that nine million European women died.

So. What did this woman do to be deemed a witch in need of burning? Is she really a witch to begin with?

Looking at the "never to return / but I never learn" and "say I won't return / but I never learn" lines: is reincarnation in play?

("We are the granddaughters of the witches you didn't burn" and "They tried to bury us; they didn't know we were seeds" and etc.)

If you want to play with the "nine million" story, what else is going on in this world that's resulting in nine million such women's deaths over the course of a couple centuries? (That's tens of thousands of witch burnings a year.)

Wild Maiden - Kellianna (Song) (fanart, fanfic, podfic)
song and lyrics
We dance the dance of the Wild Wild Maiden
We dance so wild and free
We dance in the light of the sun and the moon
And the earth and the sky and the sea

Who is the Wild Maiden, and who are her dancers?

(This request is tagged Podfic because, while ordinarily I'm not much for podfic, I'm hoping for a fill that has music in. If you're not podficly inclined, though, no worries at all.)

Woman of the Earth - Spiral Dance (Song) (fanart, fanfic, podfic)
song and lyrics
And we'll walk the paths that the old ones walk
And we'll dance the dances they taught us
And we'll sing the songs that the old ones sang
For the magick now has caught us

Divination and dancing and being out in the elements with the wild forces of nature. Feel the magic! Feel the music! The "rhythm of the land" and the "spiral dance" and the "songs that the old ones sang".

(This request is tagged Podfic because, while ordinarily I'm not much for podfic, I'm hoping for a fill that has music in. If you're not podficly inclined, though, no worries at all.)
