I think I solved it—if two characters show up right before a third leaves, instead of right after, it doesn't feel like the scene ends when the third character is out of sight of a fourth (the viewpoint) character—but like

That's good. I'm still grinding my wheels on scenes, thought small and necessary, aren't as exciting as one would want.
