three subjects meme

So how this is supposed to work is reply here and I'll give you 3 subjects I don't think you know or care much about. Then you talk about those subjects in your journal. It's interesting to see who knows what about what. I am not sure I am up to the giving of topics, but I was curious what [personal profile] zhelana would ask me to talk about:
Hippopotomuses
I WANT A HIPPOPOTAMUS FOR CHRISTMAS, ONLY A HIPPOPOTAMUS WILL DOOOOO

etymologically "river horses" from the Greek, definitely found in the River Nile, do not mistake their herbivorous nature for friendliness bc if you annoy one up close and personal it is probably your last mistake, there's a scene early in Mercedes Lackey's Alta that really illustrates this point

a vital part of the Yuletide experience

Drumming
rhythm is useful for dancing and poetry and trance work, and also pleasing to hear? my hands do not work together well enough to play drums with any success even on Rock Band? wanna learn bodhran, though, or at least try to (but there are many things I wanna learn and that's probably one of the many I'm never going to get enthusiastic enough about long enough to actually try to learn)

and from [personal profile] stultiloquentia:
walruses
The time has come, the Walrus said, to talk of many things,
Of shoes, and ships, and sealing-wax, of cabbages and kings,
and why the seas are boiling hot, and whether pigs have wings!

(I refuse to check if that's the actual Carroll)
blimps
Helium, not hydrogen. Otherwise boom!
cuneiform
Ea-nasir, the most dedicated vanity googler in Babylon

also Enheduanna, the world's earliest known named author
