(Alya knew better by now than to ask anything about 'them', or 'our kids', or once 'those mini menaces', though Adrien had not been able to maintain a straight face as he said it, and Marinette hadn't replied, only burst into giggles every time she caught a glimpse of the inexplicably and increasingly disgruntled Lila all day. The silent treatment was not fun.)

Sadly, I do know the context, so I'm unable to be the unbiased test data you sought. It is admittedly kind of fun how you went the entire story without explicitly saying what the two were; I could see an unbiased observer assuming it was Plagg and Tikki.

Except that those two aren't half as cute as needed for this.

I did not have the Chaton Noir background. My assumption is that Marinette and Adrien had to deal with a child of some sort (or children) and I didn't really think much about where said kid came from. I would probably have put in "they both take part in the equivalent of Big Brothers and Big Sisters" as to who the smalls are that have put this together.

Which is to say, it hangs together decently well without knowing the context.

(It also means I don't read the tags nearly as much as I should.)

Reading the tags, I got "dolls and a wild imagination" b/c I know a decent amount of people who personify their inanimate dolls pretty robustly.

The original story in this AU involves Marinette—being the wielder of magical creation powers—bringing a Chat Noir doll to life. The next important story, which I suspect of being the chronologically earliest in any continuity with Littlebug (since there are several related continuities that only have Chaton Noir), same deal only it's a Ladybug doll that Marinette gives Adrien before she notices she did anything out of the ordinary in making the doll. Subsequent stories marked as inspiring this one involve first the two dolls meeting, then the two dolls conspiring to get both their parent-type people in the same room with both dolls so everyone involved knows it.

Alya knows absolutely none of this.
