I would prefer not to install iTunes on my laptop.

I know of no other apps that will automatically download podcast episodes in a useful manner. If I need to use the same app I downloaded the episode with in order to identify the episode, it is not useful; if I need that app to listen to the episode, it is the opposite of useful.

Googling podcast apps does not tell me whether any of the suggested apps download episodes usefully. Suggestions please? Windows 10 and/or Android. Preferably both, as getting files between laptop and tablet currently involves either Google Drive or applying USB reader to tablet SD card. (Taking tablet to computer doctor for fixing its USB port is still not high priority, but it does make things inconvenient.)

For Windows: I use Juice podcast downloader. It's set to check automatically and download. Each podcast gets downloaded to its own folder.

Pretty much all podcast apps download eps. That's what a podcatcher does. It's not a useful podcast app for the vast majority of users if it doesn't do that. Any "best of" list will get you one.

I use Overcast, which is available for Android last I looked.

Yes, but can I listen to those episodes in VLC instead of Stitcher or whatever? Can I identify which episode is which without manually editing the file name and metadata?

Wife suggests that an RSS reader might do the trick, as podcatchers use RSS feeds to locate new episodes.
