coronavirus stuff

so face shields do fuck-all to prevent aerosol transmission, yes?

…so I just stopwatched myself with an actual mask on. I lasted a whole thirty-three seconds this time before the sensory and the anxious got to be too much. needless to say I did not accomplish anything else in that time frame.

I would like an option for being able to go out and do things (like oh say talk to a doctor about getting back on any fucking medications, or get a glasses prescription fewer than three years old, or have a doctor poke at the hand that I have now woken up three times in the past four weeks with it numb) that has somewhat more efficacy than if I wore a mesh mask.

Oh no, that sucks! I'm sorry!

I'm going to go into problem solving mode but please feel free to ignore the rest of this if not wanted.

What kind of mask? Can you tell if the the trigger is the sensation against your face, the added friction breathing, or something else?

A friend of mine with disability studies expertise has been trying to research good options for different people to work around sensory issues and i can ask her if she has suggestions. She got this little cone insert thing to keep her mask away from her face that she says helps. But she also found (when i suggested it) that getting the mask tighter against her face made it easier to breathe. Changing how it's held on, ears vs looped around head, makes a difference for me too.

I've found personally that it's really hard to breathe through woven cotton masks with those cheap particle filter inserts, and easiest to breathe through two layer soft cotton knit masks. I'm not sure knit is as protective as woven but it's probably way better than nothing.

Thought the first is that you sound like one of the people who can and should be exempt from the mask requirement, and it's worth getting in touch with the medical people involved, explaining, and asking if they can see you, or otherwise help you. (I'm doing telemedicine for the prescription refills, but that doesn't worth for eye exams or getting your hand examined.)

Thought the first is that I have a friend whose asthma was triggered by most of the available anti-COVID masks, and then found something that worked for her. Would you like me to ask her for details? At the time my thought was "Oh, good, Jo found something that works" and then a vague memory that she had bought something online that held a mask further from her face.

Three, less directly practical: according to my hygienist, she was wearing the mask to protect me, and the face shield to protect herself, because her patients have to be sitting there with no masks while she's leaning over them.

Good question; I may have to make another few once I'm vertical again

Face shields are, by my understanding, better than nothing; but not by a very great margin. They will prevent droplets; they will not prevent aerosol.

Besides mask brackets, I know there are masks out there that are designed to seal around the edges of the face, but have more space in front of the nose and mouth. So if it's the fabric directly over your nose and mouth that's the problem, a pattern with more room there might help with the problem. Here's what I've been able to dig up:

You are welcome! It took a bit of experimenting with search terms, and I still haven't found the one I was actually looking for, but at least it's something to go on.

Those conical ones give off some serious Plague Doctor vibes that I am 100% here for.
