Anne McCaffrey's dead.

She got me, and a lot of people I know, into speculative fiction. For that, I'll miss her. And it's rude to speak ill of the dead, so can we collectively retire the whole 'tent peg' issue?

I'll miss her for the wonder I had at her books, when I first read them.

I've been wishing people would let the tent peg issue go for years. The woman has (had, I suppose) clearly been suffering from mental deterioration for a long time. People who saw her at her final public appearances can testify to that. *sigh*

To more cheerful remembrances and thoughts: the Dragonrider books were one of my bedtime stories as a child; my father read them to me (with some minor edits on the fly, for which I forgive him). I adored Lessa, I loved the world. When I was ten, I would sneak into my father's room to steal them and read them for myself (I didn't have permission yet to read anything at all in his library); I'd slip them back on the shelves when I was done, so he would be none the wiser.

They're such vivid memories for me, those books. McCaffrey didn't get me into speculative fiction; my father did that, with many other authors. But she caught my imagination and gave me a place to escape. So for that she retains a fond place in my heart, even if I cast a far more critical eye on her work now that I am an adult.

That's awful. I haven't gotten very far into the books - I've read ONE - but it was still amazing and affected me. A stroke. Man...
