I am not allowed to say "I am laughably bad at knitting" until after I have finished this scarf that I'm now going to have to cast on several stitches again. This time I discovered I was knitting with the long tail from my casting on, rather than with the yarn attached to the skein.

Pfff I legit design patterns and I still end up casting on 4-5 times for most projects.

You just suffering the learning curve of knitting. I mean, I've been knitting for 13 years and I still have to double check that I don't start knitting with the long tail.

it's not that you stop fucking up, it's just that you learn to recognise HOW you fucked up and how to fix it. (how to fix it is still often: rip out and start over.)

I've started working the long tail into a crochet chain as soon as I've done casting on, because I got tired of doing that so often.

Somebody else suggested that too. I'm not sure how it would work without confusing the next row due to too many loops on the needle, but I guess it must.

It shouldn't have to involve the needles? You can just take the dangling tail and chain-stitch it into a chain by hand.
