family, and familiarity, and

I asked my sister if I could post this in public. She said yes conditional on it going somewhere neither family nor family friends would be likely to see it. So on the personal, not professional, Dreamwidth it goes.

My middle sister found something
she thought I would enjoy:
a free ebook of lesbian short stories.
I haven't read them yet
but she might be right.
She found them for herself first.
And the other week I think I saw
(if I did see it, it vanished afterward)
a Facebook post from her
that said she's bisexual.
I haven't had the nerve
to ask for confirmation.
But the lesbian short stories
that she sought out for herself
seem to indicate
that yes, she is.
Or at least friendly to the possibility.

A point of connection.
I am not alone in this house.
Six other people live here—
I've always felt alone.

There must be other points of connection.
I don't know what they might be.

She's my sister,
and I don't know her
at all.

I want to get to know her
but I don't know where to start.

She likes Doctor Who and stylish dress—
I don't have time and brain at once
to consume canon for my own fandoms
and I don't care much how I look.
I could try to knit a TARDIS scarf?
She likes scarves
but I cannot recall seeing her
wear one that wasn't woven.

I don't even have the nerve
to say this to her face.
I can write a poem and email it
but I can't talk to my sister.

She's my sister
and I love her.
I don't know her
at all.

She is in fact bisexual (both my other sisters know, my brother and parents don't, for entirely understandable reasons), and she would in fact like a TARDIS scarf, and we went shopping and had a lovely chat and bonding experience. Her Facebook post after the fact used the words 'weird' and 'awkward' but she's glad it happened. \o/

I thought about tacking another stanza onto the poem to reflect all that but it doesn't seem to fit.

Congratulations, we say,
for knowledge gained and shared.
And for a relationship
that blossoms.

Awkwardness can distill into compassion
and strangers refine to close friends.
Here's to relationship.
