Etymology is a funny thing. People name their kids Dexter (maybe not so much after that one show, but they do), which just means "right-handed". Imagine a kid named the corresponding word for "left-handed". Would royally suck to be named Sinister.

... on the up side, an NPC Paladin, of the Lawful Good, so-honorable-it-hurts variety named Victoria Vincenza Sinister really REALLY needs to happen now.

I think "Sinistra" as a female name does exist, though? Possibly that's just Harry Potter telling me lies, though. :P

... yeah, you're right, I just googled it (... could've done that in the first place, oops) and it's definitely a HP-exclusive surname.

The name wouldn't suck on face, but all the additional meanings we've (meaning Latin Christendom) associated with left-handedness have made the name much more of an issue.
