Addendum to previous post: Think I should make Mai a wheelchair user? No particular reason to (other than there being no particular reason not to), just, I'm thinking of ALL THOSE STAIRS up to Pegasus's castle in Duelist Kingdom and trying to imagine wheelchair-using Mai's reaction.

I feel like it might make it more difficult for her to use everyone else's sexism as a weapon against them (bc wheelchair-users tend to be ignored rather than sexualized). Using their ableism as a weapon would make for a rather different strategy (tho still awesome!).

That would be fucking awesome! It just, yeah, I think it'd change her story rather a lot, and I dunno if you really wanna pile on yet another backstory on your fic. (On the other hand, canon does it all the time, so you're good. :P)

Alternatively, give her a less visible disability? There's no good reason she couldn't have hypermobile joints instead (for example). She'd be a cane user, probably even a part-time wheelchair user, but it doesn't eliminate her male gaze sexualization the way a full-time wheelchair would, and there are days for folks with those disorders that stairs are Just Not Possible.
