Dear mother:

Yeah, that last Facebook post of yours is absolutely right on the money. Because "wanting attention from men" is CLEARLY the only reason a woman would choose to dress "immodestly", and because no self-respecting "Real Man" is EVER a "pig" to someone dressed modestly, in, say, a burqa.

I'm tempted to wear my shortest shorts and a tank top to Thanksgiving dinner, for the explicit purpose of proving this point. (Nobody will be at Thanksgiving dinner whom I might wish to attract. Or whom my mother might think I might wish to attract. I suspect these of being nonoverlapping populations anyway, even though she knows damn well I'm queer.) Merely tempted, not actually going to do it, because I have no plans of freezing, but seriously tempted.

Nope. Unless I go for the political T-shirts, but that's a whole different level of inappropriate and a whole different political point, though exactly which point depends on exactly which shirt.

Fair enough. And probably not a good idea to try and get someone to work through two points simultaneously.

Not freezing is a good plan, but I'd be terribly, terribly tempted as well.

Yeah, and also I don't have the boob structure that turns ordinary V-necks into horribly "immodest" shirts.

The irony about all this is, on Confirmation retreat some ten years ago, one of the things we were doing was if you believe X, go to the left side of the room, if you believe not-X or opposite-X or whatever, go to the right side. And one of the questions was on the morality of revealing clothing. And there's me, all by my lonesome, and when I was asked why, I said something like "I don't feel comfortable in revealing clothing. Y'all do what you like." My views on me-attire...have not changed.

Reminds me of the time that my uncle banned his twelve-year-old daughter from wearing ankle jewelry on the principle that it would be a "stumbling block" (how I hate that term) to men, possibly including her older brothers.

(Myself, I have hairtriggers in about five directions on this subject, due to uberconservative religious upbringing. But mostly boils down to "you do you, and sometimes I like to look sexy, and y'know what as long as viewers of same aren't assholes to me about it I don't actually even mind if it turns 'em on" but mostly "you do you," because sweet Rassilon people are such awful fucks about the whole thing.)
