Not enough calves, the girl thought; not enough lambs. Not enough pregnant cows and ewes. Her family would have to eat less meat this year, or else have smaller herds—something her father Abraham would never stand for, unless the reduction were a burnt offering to the Lord, who had brought him into Canaan.

Her father would hardly be pleased by having to eat as though he were not a wealthy man, either...

Was it the Lady's voice? Something told the girl to look up, to listen, to take up her bow and follow her father and her brother Isaac.
