Renters' insurance: sorted. Electric: sorted. Security deposit and September rent: sorted yesterday. There is now nothing that can keep me from getting my apartment keys on the 18th.

I'm still one essential short—Internet—but I need to comparison shop modems. There's no point setting up my Comcast account until I have the device to connect my computer to the Internet, you know? And I ain't renting one at ten bucks a month when the expected cost of buying one is in the double digits; that's just silly.

I usually use The Wirecutter for electronics purchases, but you are absolutely right that renting a modem is ridiculous.

If you're going Comcast, they have a couple recommendations at http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-cable-modem/ - one's $90 and one's $65ish, but really, I just find reading their testing information to be helpful in figuring out what meets my requirements.

I realize I always plug The Wirecutter, because I am fascinated by their testing writeups and I want to know I'm not the only one who spends hours reading about testing methodology for power strips and electric shavers and whatnot.

A thing I got bit by on my ISP is that they wanted a specific kind of modem, rather than "complies with these standards", which the one I had worked for. Since their website only talked about the standards, it was a rather rude awakening.

So it may be worth querying the office to see if they have similar requirements.
