Kitty is pets me!

I think I might have to take the cone collar off, sanitize it, and put it back on with a washcloth taped to the inside. I haven't yet because that seems potentially uncomfortable for Thea, but there keeps being blood on the inside of the damn thing, which I think means the bandaids over the latches aren't enough padding.

Say, when do I need to worry about taking the red plastic claws off to clip the real ones?

Kitty is pets you is good.

Yes, poor Thea and poor Alex probably need dealing with the damn collar.

More hugs?

The claw tips will most likely fall off before you need to clip her claws.

With cats, we usually take the collar off every few days and wash it down with a little soap and water, then pat it dry. Keeps it from being quite so gross. :)

Maybe put some gauze over the latches and tape it down with the bandaids? Hmm. Or put the fabric collar in between the plastic collar and her chin. Or we could ship you a Velcro collar from Chewy! Which we're happy to do, just let me know.

The softclaws will shed when the outer layer of the claws shed -- usually in about 4-6 weeks. It's not unusual for them to come off slowly over time, so don't worry if it's been a while and she's still got one or two of them on -- it all depends on how quickly the nails grow new layers and wear off the top one, and it's usually slower when they've got softclaws on (since the actual claw isn't getting rubbed against things). You actually can't remove them once they're glued to the claw, so don't worry about it!

Order submitted! And you're welcome; we're always happy to help.

Yeah, they work by krazygluing the plastic cap to the outer layer of the claw, and then they fall off when the outer layer of the claw sheds! Which is why putting them on the cat inevitably involves krazygluing you to the cat at some point...

Softclaws are a two-person job for many reasons. :D

(One of which is that it's damn hard to get the damn caps on the damn claw even without the krazyglue...)

Thank you folks ever so much for the mental images!

If you are thinking of eventually switching to nail clipping, my personal strategy is to have kitty nail clippers where we tend to relax/snuggle. (near the TV, on my desk, etc). If I only do one paw, no big deal, I'm more interested in making it NOT A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE.

Chance doesn't even run away anymore when I'm done, he just is kind of resigned while it happens and then waits for the treat bonanza.

Lily used to mew PATHETICALLY while we trimmed her nails. She is not quite so chill but has mostly stopped with her SADDEST CAT NOISES.

Singing to them while we clip their nails somehow seems to help with the struggling? YMMV. It does not seem to matter what I sing, though I usually make up nonsense songs about how they are good cats who are going to get a lot of treats very soon so. Yes. I think it's also that if I'm relaxed about the whole thing, they don't worry as much.
