I don't think they're checking so much as having the sign-up include a yes/no on 18+, with stated reasoning in hopes of getting teens to not lie. That could be handled on AO3 with freeform tags in the sign-up, I think.

Very much so, but since it's also not just writing, that might be the real reason it's not on AO3, even run AO3 runs all sorts of art-welcome challenges, yes, I know.

Perhaps it's the sort of thing where they don't want to go to AO3 because AO3 is where all the smut is? At this point, I don't know.

they don't mind if the gifts only get posted on AO3, though. it looks like posting on tumblr is required but the post can consist entirely of pointing the recipient at the work on AO3.

if you want to participate, I can ask the mods if you could sign up under my tumblr? you'd give your own email in the sign-up for contact-from-mods purposes, you'd post to your own AO3, I'd just post to tumblr and tag the recipient like I'd do anyway, and we'd ask the mods to make sure the people creating gifts for you and me were clear when posting the gifts on which of us each gift was for. should work, I think.

Word of Mod: you don't need a Tumblr to sign up, it's only on Tumblr to better coordinate gifts that aren't fic, the mods can do the Tumblr part of the getting the gift to the recipient once the gift is on AO3. There's a bit more than two days before sign-ups close.
