I'm trying to source the name origins for Nino Lahiffe in vague hope of identifying his ethnic background. Behind The Name says "Nino" is short for Italian names such as Antonino and Giannino, except when it's a feminine Georgian name. I'd thought it was Spanish—I mean, "Colleen" is Anglicized Irish for "girl"†—but it turns out the word I'm thinking of is "niño" and, aside from how that is not (at least in the English dub) how it's pronounced, Behind The Name doesn't admit that's a name at all. DuckDuckGo, meanwhile, sent me to Wiktionary, which thinks "Níno" is a Serbo-Croatian diminutive of Nikolas, no option for Italian and nothing else on the Nino page. (Which isn't where "Níno" should be in the first place.) Wiktionary also calls "Niño" a Cebuano given name (nothing else on the page), which, okay, I can't rule that out of Nino's family tree? But that's an ethnic minority in the Philippines, a former Spanish conquest where people mostly don't speak French, and somehow it sounds more plausible that Nino is actually, you know, Spanish! (Also I'm astonished Wiktionary didn't simply redirect me to El Niño!)

Meanwhile Behind The Name Surnames says "Lahiffe" is Irish, but it's a user-submitted name; veracity therefore potentially dubious. DuckDuckGo points me at the Wiki page for one Robert Lahiffe, a dead Irish politician, so I'll buy it's an Irish name—but it must be a pretty rare one? Robert is the fifth result. Second is names dot org, which thinks "Lahiffe" is a given name; fourth is ancestry dot com. And with the possible exception of Pooh's Adventures Wiki—I don't know the actual purpose of this site but the preview text here is definitely to do with the ML character—the rest of the top ten are about the Miraculous Ladybug character!

Gaaaaack.

† One (or two?) of Mom's petty annoyances is she and Dad had picked out two girl names before I was born, Dad chose which at the hospital, and oldest sister got the other one later. Oldest sister is brunette, I am redheaded, and her name is distinctly Irish and what my parents gave me is distinctly not; this is a betrayal of all our Irish ancestors, or something. This also wouldn't have come up if Mom's oldest brother's middle child, who is a few months older than I am, had been (or, you know, appeared to be) a boy. My uncle and aunt sniped the name "Colleen" for that cousin, you see.

I'm writing "Stormy Weather 2" out of the Miraculous Ladybug canon.

Also I'm going to make "Stormy Weather 2 What Stormy Weather 2" an AO3 tag. It is going on all my future ML fics that do not explicitly deal with this episode.

"Origins" is at the start of the school year, presumably the first week of September.

"Stormy Weather" is on "the first day of summer", which might (depending on definition) be as early as mid-May but is most likely June 21 or 22.

"Dark Cupid", which must be after "Stormy Weather" judging by Ladybug and Chat Noir's comfort with their abilities and each other, is definitely Feb 14.

"Santa Claws" is definitely Dec 25.

Marinette turned fourteen in "Befana", unless her parents misspoke and she didn't feel impelled to correct them that she was newly fifteen (I think the cake candle count backs the smaller number but I'd have to check a screenshot). If we're including timeline data from the webisodes, this is the second birthday she's had since "Origins".

Either Marinette's math is off or Adrien, who by all indications turned fourteen back in "The Bubbler", is still fourteen in "Chris Master".

Apparently this is all during their troisième year?

On first viewing of Miraculous Ladybug, it is important to watch these four episodes in this order: Princess Fragrance; Origins: Ladybug & Chat Noir; Origins: Stoneheart; Volpina. The Origins two-part must be watched consecutively, and since they are the first chronological episodes and thus (in this viewing order) a flashback, watching both immediately after Princess Fragrance is as good a place as any. Other episodes may come between Princess Fragrance and Origins without difficulty, however, and other episodes will come between Origins and Volpina.

Me at eleven last night: I'm gonna write a little thing exploring one particular facet of the most recent episode. I'll be in and out in 1500 words, easy.

7.5 hours and 4500 words later and I'm not even done yet: Damn, when you sit these two clowns down for an open and honest talk about their feelings, it turns out they have a lot to say!

I'm trying to come up with a puntastic name for a pop physics blog, because by authorial decree Adrien Agreste amuses himself by analyzing footage of akuma fights as though he's not a participant. The pseud he's using (also puntastic and not yet thought of) is one he can safely connect to his Adrien identity, though he doesn't intend to do that until he's confident he won't get paternally lectured again on how there's so much more financial security in getting an MBA and taking over the family business than there is in academic research in the hard sciences, really, Adrien, I have only your best interests at heart here.

Adrien has a second pseud, more transparently Chat Noir, to guest contribute to himself with, but he hasn't used it; there just hasn't been a good time to ask Ladybug's opinion on one or both of them doing science on their own abilities, never mind recording everything for analysis in full view of the internet. (One of these will be an easier sell than the other anyway.) But enough of the battles end up with publicly accessible video that Adrien can still do a lot of analysis, with plans to tell Ladybug anything useful he deduces (preferably by pointing her at the blog post), and with vague notions of eventually studying physics at university and impressing the scientific community with his work here.

In any event, I need a punny blog name and two pseuds. So I, intending to skim a bunch of search results till I found something satisfactorily physicist-y to name the blog, googled "miraculous puns".

...I don't know what I expected...

Fanon: Chat Noir gets a lot of hate from the fans and is regarded as Ladybug's sidekick more than her partner. (I'm currently rereading [archiveofourown.org profile] Freedom_Shamrock's "Bobbin Bug", but I've seen this a lot.)

Canon: not sure supports this interpretation.

Real world: Misogyny exists. So does racism; I am not sure how apparent it is to random Parisians that Ladybug, Rena Rouge, and Carapace are people of color and Chat Noir and Queen Bee are white, if only because I really like the idea that identity scramble magic means our Miraculous wielders are recognizable but hell if anyone can describe them, but let us suppose that this is known.

Proposed alternate interpretation: Ladybug gets top billing because everyone knows she, not Chat Noir or any of the others, can purify akumas and restore the physical damage they do. This is not in contention. What is in contention is whether this is how it should be. A lot of fans—well, "fans"; I can't imagine any of our heroes except maybe Queen Bee having any patience with this line of thinking—think this is or should be Chat Noir's show. Ladybug having the superior powers is an offense against nature generally and Chat Noir specifically, and also he deserves more credit than he gets.

Also, a lot of "fans" plagiarize Alya Césaire. People know the Ladyblog is the best source, but they know it the way people know what Watson and Crick discovered was mostly Franklin's notes, and the way people know Elvis had musical inspiration, y'know, out there somewhere. Which is to say, a lot of people don't know it, and are happy to attribute Alya's work to the whiter, maler people who stole it from her.

Discuss.

...dear brain can we at least finish what Netflix has up of Carmen Sandiego before plotting the Miraculous Ladybug crossover (ETA: done now, plotting merrily away)

...say, how old do we think Carmen and crew are? I'm honestly pegging the lot at sixteen to nineteen. (Ivy's oldest, obv) also do not think I missed Player's fidget spinner

(Also, wrt beautiful badass ladies in red, does Adrien have a type or does Adrien have a type)

QUEEN'S BATTLE IS A THREE-PART EPISODE. WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU BREAKING IT UP FOR???

Look, Astruc, if you want to scramble the airing order so nobody knows the chronology, FINE. But how could you let Netflix break up Queen's Battle???

I need a bunch of usernames so that my queer teen characters have online community.

So far I have:
@adrien_agreste (Gabriel-approved Adrien)
@gravitylawbreaker (Adrien)
@dichatomic (Chat Noir)
@greenbeautyquark (Catherine)

@pieceofcakedesigns (Marinette)
@fly_away_home (Ladybug)
I need to figure out probably all their canonical schoolmates, but also I need a bunch of original characters. Some Parisian queers of assorted ages, and some worldwide esp-trans esp-teen queers. These are all bit parts, mind you, but.

...so I'm actually pants at coming up with usernames. Anyone who wants to drop a cute handle or three in the comments for me to steal—accompanied if you like with AGSL (age, gender, sexuality, location) and a line about personality and/or interests—please do!

Soooo who's seen any Sailor Moon Classic recently and can recommend to me an episode in which there's a particularly high level of successful flirtatious? Or any anime, really, as long as it's likely Adrien Agreste, anime junkie, has seen it, and the relevant episode(s) are available for me to see. Bonus points for f/f!

Also, over 1K of today's words look like this:
Adrien checks the time, winces, says something about needing to be home for dinner. Marinette retorts, dinner at my place, you're invited. Adrien tries to duck out of it. Marinette gets up in his face and says, you're invited. Adrien relents. Alya asks what just happened. Adrien says something like, "I have learned that when she uses that tone of voice, even if she is saying two times two makes five, I am better off going along with it."

"Two times two is five," say Marinette and Catherine in unison, and Catherine continues, "Can't you count?"
That's planning, not writing, you know? But I'm counting it!

Words are posted for mldrafts and exchangefic access filters to see

(Noting so I don't forget bc [personal profile] silveradept said this aloud: Utena. Check out Utena. Probably on Crunchyroll?)

This Facebook post by Heather Flores came to my attention via the PDX NaNo Facebook group. The course mentioned herein on the Heroine's Journey comes in mini and maxi; the mini version is like four days long and, while the suggested donation is $27, one can (I did) sign up for free. (I'm afraid to ask how much money the maxi is...)

I just finished day one, and I can already tell this is going to have intriguing consequences on my NaNo project. Because Flores is right: a feminist story doesn't reenact kyriarchal models.

I'm not arguing there's anything objectionable enough to bar everyone from doing the thing about writing stories that *do* partially reenact kyriarchal models. )

...So my NaNovel? Miraculous Ladybug fanfiction. I hesitate to say ML is a magical girl anime, but I can't picture ML existing substantially in its present form if Sailor Moon hadn't, either. Cartoon violence is pretty much part of the package.

But, you know, let's think about this. My outline's kind of light on the fourth quarter action plot anyway; I know how things play out emotionally, more or less, but in terms of character actions and dialogue, I'm a lot less sure. So I might could change my outline so that one of the fourth quarter realizations is that canon-typical violence won't solve this problem. So that the happy ending needs the characters to resolve things through cooperation and communication. So that the protagonists' motivations aren't what they want to obtain or to defeat, but what they want to know or to change.

*eyes canon* ...yeah, this is gonna be amusing.

But I think I can do it.
