The *post office* didn't have postcards? That's bizarre. Did you try a drugstore, convenience store or book store? Around here you can get postcards in those places. (Of course, around here you can get postcards at the post office.) Or where's your nearest tourist destination? You usually don't have to pay the entrance fee to go into the gift shop. Or buy a greeting card and cut off the front, if you can find one with a picture you like.
Barnes & Noble carries them. You might also try drug stores or Target. (I had the same trouble when I had a friend visiting me last summer - she wanted to mail postcards to people, and we went looking all over to find them.)
