Fuckwit in Slacktivist comments arguing that some of somebody's list of fifty most racist editorial cartoons aren't racist. Fuckwit described one of the cartoons as using Nazi imagery, not against Jews (which would, fuckwit agrees, be racist) but against Israelis. Fuckwit described another of the cartoons as saying Islam is inherently violent, and then described that as not a racist position. (I suppose it wouldn't be racist as such if white folks in general acknowledged that white Muslims exist. See also, Boston Marathon bomber.) Fuckwit is now going after me, apparently for declining to explain in detail why each of the things fuckwit says isn't racist actually is. I have other things to do today.

...this is why I have left Slacktivist like three times now. Yes. Yes it is. I do not need to go back and look at the train wreck. Nothing good can possibly come of it.

I am a much happier person having left. I did look in once, when I was really bored (and, weirdly, someone was talking about me, which was a bit wtf), and it has gotten horrific.

Using Disquis + no moderator = completely and utterly unworkable for any site. It could be a site about cute kittens and it would devolve into trolls controlling the whole thing in short order.

Agree on pretty much all of this. I left because it just got so constantly stressful--so much shouting. I miss the days when Fred's was small enough that he could get by without a moderator, but then, I may have rose-coloured glasses for a time that didn't exist. (Then I wandered onto John Scalzi's blog, and whatever I think of him as a writer, I'm a little in love with the Mallet of Loving Correction, esp. on kitten setting.)

But I liked a lot of the people! Enough to have friended several of you over here.

For me, the breaking point was a bunch of people lecturing me that I was supposed to be nice to someone who wanted me to die because I happened to be disabled. Yeah, that... was enough.

Honestly, I rarely read comments on ANY public site like that. They will always make me grind my teeth.
