...If I have a [present-day] character called David and I give him a boyfriend named Jonathan, is that too on the nose?

It'll probably go over most people's heads.

That's gonna depend on the characters, honestly?

how destined and epic and/or tragic is their relationship? if it's not terribly it's really not going to be too on the nose.

because, yeah, unless the parallels are beat you over the head obvious, it'll go over most people's heads as a reference. (actually even if they ARE obvious, it'll likely go over some people's heads anyway. *wry*)

I'd chuckle at it.
It'd go over a lot of people's heads.
It'd infuriate a choice few.

One of Isaac Asimov's most famous couples were named Elijah and Jezebel. I think you'll be fine. If it starts seeming weird, just hang a lantern on it and have a character comment on it.

The early Robot books - in The Caves of Steel and sequels. The main character Lije Bailey had the full name Elijah, and his wife was Jezebel, who went by Jess. IIRC, they actually met because somebody thought it would be funny to introduce them because of the names (This being Asimov, though, Jess didn't get to do much ...and what we did see of their relationship was, uh, more like their namesakes' than might have been ideal.)

I'm thinking that the number of people posting here who do get the (potential) reference is a sign that probably your readership in general would?

Some people won't get it. But for the ones who do get it, yes, it would be a bit too obvious.
