anyway we have kinda decided this one card someone sent one of us at some point is getting framed and hung in the kitchen. it is red with big white capital letters:

YOU DID
YOUR BEST
& NO ONE
WE CARE
ABOUT DIED

and dinner only got a little scorched

Or, as a crazy Navy SEAL of Himself's acquaintance used to say, "Am I going to die? Are you going to die? Is anybody we care about going to die? Is anybody going to lose a leg? If not, then why are we worried?"

(He was a very laid-back guy, to be sure. Possibly because of a calm serenity born of the awareness that he was almost certainly the most dangerous person in any room.)

Well, probably also from the fact that in the Navy at pretty much any level you pretty well just have to make peace with the fact that the ocean may kill you even if you are smart and careful and do everything right.

I mean dealing with that reality can go a couple of ways but one of them is serene calm in the face everything that’s not likely to kill you simply because it was your unlucky day...

To quote Himself, this time: "A storm at sea is a great deal of fun, providing you aren't actively sinking at the time."

(This included, I found out some time later, the storm off the Virginia Capes that took out the ship's radio and knocked a hole in the deck of the ship big enough to flood the Forward Officers' Quarters.)
