I have done math on inadvisable expenditures, and it looks like the Miraculous Ladybug DVDs for the French market, there's currently seventeen covering the first three seasons. I could acquire two-thirds of those on Amazon dot com right now (yay stimulus), for like 350 USD, not counting tax or shipping.
I could instead Paypal somebody in France enough money to buy all seventeen volumes of DVD on Amazon dot FR (12–15 as a box set, the other box sets being unavailable), plus enough money to mail those directly to my US address, plus idk 40 EUR for that person's time and trouble, and it would cost me distinctly less than 350 USD. because the DVDs—which would be new, not in whatever condition the Amazon dot com resellers happen to have them in—total 129 EUR.
(mind you this is only worth it if I can rip those to my hard drive, French subtitle files openable in Notepad and all, and if the French subtitles are based on the French audio, rather than being the translations of the English subtitles Netflix has stuck us with.)

Shipping would be around 50€, I think, from a quick search on our post office website.
There might be a zoning issue on reading the DVDs, though.

my plan involves ripping with MakeMKV, since the thing I am mostly after is French subtitles that match the French audio (unlike all the ones on the internet, which Netflix helpfully provided after translating from the English dub, which means hearing "Je m'appelle Marinette" and seeing "Le jour, je suis Marinette"); I do not believe MakeMKV cares about DVD region 🙂
