Marinette snorts, resolutely ignoring the question of when Chat Noir might have noticed this, because she certainly doesn't remember seeing him. "I wonder why."
"Same, only without sarcasm. I hate it when you're hurting."
Something clogs in her chest: rocks damming a stream.
"Nothing's wrong," Marinette says, biting down the 'chaton' that wants to follow. "You can't help with this and you shouldn't try. I just…" She sniffles. "Just need to put on my big girl panties and get over myself."
He considers her with sad eyes. "Would a hug help?"
Yes. "No."
His face falls. Something rings false about the expression, in the same way his brightest smiles look wrong. "Oh," he says; the disappointment sounds sincere. "Because I had a crap day too, and I know a hug would help me, and—"
Marinette rolls far enough off the lounge chair to grab his hand and tug him down after her. She hurts him enough. She won't let him stay worse hurt than she can help.
