Weekend decluttering

I am continuing the project of moving my younger son into his own room, formerly our spare room.  He and his clothes are installed, but there is no room yet for any of his other belongings like books or toys.  Today I excavated around and under the bed and found many things! Some have gone in the bin, some have gone in the laundry, some have gone onto a shelf to sort out later.

More about my Surprise Tip Run and plans for reshelving in the comments. How is your weekend decluttering going?

adair: stack of books (books)
[personal profile] adair posting in [community profile] unclutter
Very little decluttering done this week. I spent a lot of today at the B2P book sale, preparing things for tomorrow - from 10-5 when we hope to sell a lot of books and make a big chunk of money to pay for shipping. We had a lot of help - a women/s group called Altrusa, students from 2 fraternities, some people recruited one by one. Thursday a few of us set up tables and organized the room; then Thursday night 35 students carried endless boxes up a stair with landing, across a big space and into the sale room. I was not there, but this morning at 9 am about a dozen people unloaded the semi-sorted boxes, arranged them on tables, romed books sorted in the wrong category. I spent at least an hour sorting donated odds and ends - cds, dvds, vhs tapes (Lots of VHS tapes) unused journals, maps (Lots of maps) a small wooded book holder, an old Bingo set, empty binders, empty photo books, - I could go on. These all had to be priced and laid out so at least some could be seen.

I also shopped the books for my other gig - collecting books for Illinois prison libraries. I had 3 lists - two were not things I expected to find, but one was 5 pages, organized by author from A-D. It looks like they are filling in sets or replacing damaged books. I got a start on those - brought home 12 books, including 3 on Java and two hardcover Jean Auel books.

I am tired. Tomorrow is the sale; I will arrive at 8 and probably stay until 2-3. I am a cashier, and I will also look for more books. I have a Lot of experience organizing books - looking for them and trying to let go of them. Neither is easy.

Ahhh.. parenting... the fine art of sneaking old coloring books and the random piece of paper with markers on it to the recycling without the children noticing...

I've nearly finished recharging the rechargeable batteries, snuck out a handful of papers and a coloring book to the recycling, and sent 3 birthday cards that have been lingering on my desk for the last week. At least sending the cards makes me feel like I'm decluttering.

Bite-sized Anti-procrastination

Little by little we get over the hurdle, past the obstacle and little by little we make a difference. We may not have the time, the energy, the power or the ability to tackle the whole, but if we examine things carefully we can find the bit that we can do, the progress that we can make - the steps that begin the journey.

In the middle of the week, we have our anti-procrastination day. It's a great opportunity to look carefully at the things we've been avoiding starting and thinking about why we aren't getting anywhere with them. There are any number of reasons and it really doesn't matter what they are, they were good reasons before, but now is our chance to reevaluate and to begin to look for a way past them. Remember - this comm is not about having to manage to complete the whole of a task in one go, it's about finding first the way to start and then the way to continue it until we can overcome it. Tasks don't have to be daunting and beyond us, because all we're looking for at any time is the next step.

Can you think of something that you'd like to begin? Something that bit by bit you could overcome? What's today's part of that task going to be (or tomorrow's if today's is the planning stage)?

Title: Waiting

Notes: For [community profile] 100words prompt "fear" and [community profile] draco100 prompt "moment".

Draco's waiting by the window of the cafe. His coffee's cold and forgotten. He hasn't taken his eyes off the street. He knows she's still coming, knows he'll see her soon, but for a moment his mind scurries and he feels a chill in his bones. A fear that this time, she won't meet him at their table.

The door opens and Hermione's there, pulling her hat off, unwinding her scarf, and looking his way. He's standing before he knows it and she's suddenly in his arms. "Missed you," he says into her hair. She holds him tight and smiles.

Size 12 is Not Fat by Meg Cabot

archersangel: (blah)
[personal profile] archersangel posting in [community profile] books

This is one of those books that I went back-and-forth on even put to the list of books to rent from booklender.com, much less actually putting it in my "impending" books list at the site. I kind of regret it.

It feels like it's two different books. One is about a former teen pop star that got dropped from her label after wanting to sing her own, more serous, songs instead of the "bubblegum pop" stuff they wanted. Then her mom ran off to Argentina with her manager and all of her money. Followed by her finding her fiancee (in a boy band at the same label) cheating with the latest (20-something) pop sensation. Because she has no money she has to move in with her ex's brother (who's the black sheep of the family) & take a job as an assistant director at a college dorm.

The other is a murder mystery of the "cozy" kind. I prefer cozy mysteries (where they don't go into gory detail & are light on sex & violence) but this one was kind of "fluffy" except for a knock-down-drag-out fight at the end.
Also at times if felt like it was trying to be a third book about how being a size 12 is not fat & is the size of the average American woman, you know. And if you don't know, you should.

Over all I had a hard time getting though it & would've quit it, but I wanted to see who did it & why. Seriously doubt I will be reading the others in the series.
