In Tamora Pierce's The Will of the Empress. Daja left her first students elsewhere in Namorn, having handed them both over to other mages for instruction in meditation and their respective magics. But Briar's and Tris's first students traveled with their teachers, at least for a while, and Sandry's first student lived right there in the same city that Winding Circle Temple's adjacent to. So why is it that (iirc) the only students of any of the four that so much as got mentioned in Empress were Daja's?

ETA: Wait, no, Sandry's student got referenced briefly at the end in context of why Sandry hadn't wanted to let the other three back in her head. But still.
