"lord", etymologically "guardian of bread"; "lady" possibly "maker of bread", etymonline says OED doesn't really believe this but hasn't a better idea.
let's make those gender-neutral terms. or relating to social roles that aren't gender but aren't not gender either. expect that any household will have at least one adult of each (won't always, of course, but expect) and the same words probably apply to the leaders of a city. different words for the leaders of a nation, but everyone knows it's the same roles scaled up.
