last night we watched Shakespeare in the Park Much Ado About Nothing, a production with an all-black cast, set in spring 2020 Georgia (filmed in 2019) in the backyard of a house with Stacey Abrams 2020 banners
the production begins with Beatrice singing about police brutality, and moments later when Don Pedro and the soldiers march in, they're carrying protest signs saying things like "Hate Is Not A Family Value"
Beatrice is both one of the largest and one of the darkest people in the cast, which is notable mostly for the entirely sincere bit where Benedick is rhapsodizing about Beatrice's beauty
there are a couple bits in Act V scene iv that are positively glorious and also a distinct contrast to the film version starring Kenneth Branagh
it is entirely fabulous and it is available on PBS.org for another couple weeks
