...see, this is why we need single-fucking-payer health care. So that when a doctor says "do this" and you do it, that single payer is obligated to pay for it, rather than the company that's supposed to pay all-but-maybe-twenty-dollars of it instead paying for a small amount of it and sticking you with a five-hundred-dollar bill.

There is no explanation on the invoice of why the insurance company does not cover...whatever the hell it is on this invoice that they don't cover, I can't tell, all the "charge" numbers are even dollar figures and both the "adjustment" and the "insurance paid" figures have cents, and the "insurance paid" number is the smallest amount on the page. And nobody fucking told me that this was anything other than routine fucking bloodwork! (Which I still haven't heard from anybody what the results were, by the way. The bloodwork was a month ago.)
I do have the cash on hand to pay this bill, but the only reason I have the cash on hand is because I was hoping to take WR 341 Poetry Writing this summer and consequently reserved half of my federal tax refund for that purpose. (Financial aid ain't gonna cover summer courses if either the total credits taken over the summer are fewer than six or the student does not tell the financial aid office to have the financial aid package for the year cover the summer. Both would apply.) Also I listened to my mother when she said $300 was a good size for an emergency fund given that I still live with my parents; I am aware that this was a mistake, but at least it was a mistake that let me pay off a loan. (That's where the other half of my federal tax refund went.)
