So I finally got around to watching
Ember Days. It's...put it this way: it's kind of craptastic but it's on the now-seven-item-long list of shit I want fic of for Yuletide. HECATE. (My icon.) Kickass. Not enthralled by her character motivation (eta: to be fair, the 'save my baby' motivation is also what's driving one of the male characters, so this film at least doesn't gender it), or by the fact that one of the antagonists is the only character of color in the whole damn film, and we seem to have lost track of an important character. But the film passes Bechdel (once, but it passes), and Hecate is the primary protagonist and did I mention she's kickass?
And the music rocks, too. I think the film benefited by my having listened to the soundtrack beforehand, because "Poem of War" is key background information—mostly conveyed in dribs and drabs over the film, but key. One of these days I'm going to get the rest of SJ Tucker's body of work, and I should check out Bekah Kelso and Alexander James Adams (who were also involved with the soundtrack, and Tucker and Adams have minor parts in the film and Kelso plays Hecate), but not today.
