Nov. 22nd, 2014 10:45 amI am interested in people's reactions to this quote from Eli Clare's Exile & Pride, essay entitled "Freaks and Queers":
(PSA for anyone who wants to read the essay: ableist language left right and center. For purposes of critiquing same—like, the R word is followed by the sentence "I learned early that words could bruise a body"—but still present.)
I think about language. I often call nondisabled people able-bodied, or when I'm feeling confrontational, temporarily able-bodied. But if I call myself disabled in order to describe how the ableist world treats me as a person with cerebral palsy, then shouldn't I call nondisabled people enabled? That word locates the condition of being disabled, not in the nondisabled body, but in the world's reaction to that body. This is not a semantic game.

Nov. 22nd, 2014 10:51 amGah. Speaking of fonts, what font is this book in? Because it has capital Q looking like 2 and then it capitalizes the Q in 'Queer' over and over. It's otherwise perfectly legible, but I should not have to stop every couple of lines and go "wait that is not a two".
Aha. Thank you, braggy end-of-book notes from typesetters: "This book was set in Hoefler and the Fell Types." Never heard of, but shall now steer clear.
(no, I never did get the hang of cursive capital Q, why do you ask?)

I think I have a wisdom tooth coming in.
Mom's like "...Tylenol? Whiskey? Wait, you're not really a whiskey person..." Um, thanks, real helpful?
(owww.)
ETA: No whiskey to be found in the house. Even though Mom swears she is still in possession of the bottle her parents gave her when I was first teething. Brandy worked. Did the rinse-and-spit thing and it hurts much less now. Also glugged eight ounces of apple cider, because ye gods brandy is nasty.
I am however no longer sure the problem is actually the tooth. Poking at the sore spot with my tongue leads me to the conclusion that the sore spot is the inside of the cheek above the tooth.
