unfortunately this is *not* in context of, as one might suppose it would be after having read her most famous published works, JKR opposing Nazis )

I thought it would be possible to hold on to the good bits of Harry Potter canon and sift out the parts rooted in JKR's transmisia and queermisia and antisemitism and

I think I was wrong.

ETA: apparently the reason I did not previously hear about this is because the other participant in this twitter thread is a Jewish TERF, not a Nazi (see [personal profile] seekingferret and [personal profile] jadelennox below)

—hey, when did I become a Harry/Draco shipper?

I think I blame [archiveofourown.org profile] astolat.

(Fuck. I have many chapters left of this fic and it's time to leave for work.)

Hey, has anyone got book-canonical evidence of Hermione Granger's skin tone, other than her being "very brown" on returning from France in Prisoner of Azkaban? I can't remember.

...no, I'm not thinking of writing a HP AU and just casually noting that Hermione is black, why would you think that? >_> <_<

(except I'm also thinking of stealing borrowing elements from Dangerverse, and DV canon definitely has Hermione as white...)

(oh ye gods the canon review...I don't have time for this, brain...)

My first fandom was Sailormoon. I remember inventing my own Outer Scouts before discovering—and I don't know how I discovered this—that it was a Japanese show and there was more to it than had aired in the US. I latched on to the Sailormoon Millennia Trilogy fanfic mostly, which I think may have been after we got S and SuperS in the States? Never did get Stars as far as I know, and SMMT has an alternate to Stars as well as a prequel and sequel to the series. My first published fanfic was fanfic of SMMT, and it died with Geocities, and while I know it still exists on the Wayback Machine, please do not go looking for it.

My second fandom was Harry Potter. I spent every free moment between bus arrival at my high school and the bell for homeroom in the library, saving fanfics to a floppy disk so I could read them in leisure at home. And I read the first five books dozens of times. I wasn't as impressed with the sixth, only read it maybe a half dozen times, and the seventh I think I've only read twice. Needless to say, it's been a while since I've been in that fandom, except for Anne Walsh's Dangerverse. I wrote some fanfic for that, too, which still exists on fanfiction.net.

My third fandom was Supernatural. Lots of y'all know me through Supernatural. This was also my first slash fandom. I got into it the summer before season five, saw Lazarus Rising on a rerun and got hooked, and I was so busy marathoning the first three seasons that I missed the reruns of episodes two and three of S4. (Also the rerun of the stripper episode, but I think that one just didn't reair.) And I was reading [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang as I went. I was a little confused that summer, but once I got it all straightened out in my head I had a blast. I still mean to finish the Epic Bechdel Fixit Project. That's gonna be entertaining, though...

I've had flings with other fandoms, Community, Lost Girl, [personal profile] synecdochic et al's Clan Mitchell Stargateverse, but they were never my fandom, you know?

I seem to be between fandoms at the moment. Unless we count Fairy Tales and Related Fandoms. Or Blow That Trumpet Gabriel, which really shouldn't count as a fandom for me because I'm the canon creator... I'm really enjoying this year's Yuletide fandom, but for obvious reasons I can't name it, and equally obviously there's not a whole lot out there for it.

whydoyouneedtoknow, aka Anne Walsh, and [personal profile] damkianna. Both are fabulous authors who hit my big fic kink: MOAR LADIES = MOAR AWESOME.

damkianna avoids killing or otherwise writing out canon female characters—one of her big projects, Flying Blossoms, is a bunch of Five Thingses that are either 'five women X's mother might have been' or 'five things X's mother might have done', and in every instance the mother in question is someone never or rarely seen in Avatar: the Last Airbender. And in Imagine the Ocean and Listen to the Earth, the Avatar Gang is populated by an ever-increasing number of canon female characters. Suki. Yue. There's also a friendly Fire Nation commander OFC, Yin. The central plot point of Imagine/Listen is that Katara is the Avatar; I am dying to see what happens when damkianna gets hold of The Legend of Korra.

Anne makes use of original female characters as well as canon female characters—not that damkianna doesn't, but damkianna's epic doesn't rely on the OFCs the way Anne's epic does. The Dangerverse is named for the OFC who sets everything in motion, Gertrude 'Danger' Granger, Hermione's twenty-years-older sister who has psychic abilities and who marries Remus and with his help kidnaps Harry from his more-abusive-than-canon relatives and frees Sirius from Azkaban so that Sirius can marry OFC #2, Aletha Freeman, Lily's best friend, and with her have a kid, OFC #3, Meghan. Remus, Sirius, Danger, and Aletha collectively raise Harry, Hermione, Meghan, and Draco Black—yes you heard that right; Narcissa gets a Crowning Moment of Awesome into the bargain. And from there the changes just sort of spiral.

Anne and damkianna are the two authors I tried but failed to imitate with my [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang last year, and the authors I am trying and hopefully succeeding to imitate with my [livejournal.com profile] sncross_bigbang this year. (It helps that Anne wrote A Widow in Waiting, first of the Chronicles of Glenscar, which is the 'verse I'm crossing with Supernatural, and I have conned Anne into doing beta work for my Big Bang.)

I'll come back to day twelve.

Supernatural 3x11 MYSTERY SPOT. This is the defining episode of Sam in seasons one through five. He goes utterly batshit crazy trying to save Dean, and when he thinks Dean is beyond saving, he shuts down into superhunter mode. I can't really explain my glee over this episode but it is beyond question my favorite of the series.
